In this world, a punishment always fits the crime. Even the little crimes come with big punishments. Back then and now, punishments are looked upon as entertainment. People chuckle and shake their heads in disbelief when a man is sent to jail for stealing a pair of ordinary white socks. Whipping a rotten tomato at your neighbor in the stocks makes your day a bit better. Robert Blecker from CNN writes, "Ironically, even as we recoil from punishing those who most deserve it, we readily over-punish those who don't." People cannot be perfect. What all people have in common is facing consequences for actions. As our technology and the earth evolves around us, our crimes also change. What wasn't possible yesterday is possible today. Crimes involving stealing customer's information and privacy is popping up all over the headlines. The article from the Economist exclaims, "America needs fewer and clearer laws, so that citizens do not need a law degree to stay out of jail." While our crimes change with time, punishments also change.
